Making Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up” in Ableton by Jim Pavloff

December 18th, 2009

This is just wicked, some of the EQs and use of choruse (and a fair bit of mono) are quite specific and must have taken quite a while to work out.

I suppose I’d never really thought about it in relation to the Prodigy but I’m really surprised about the amount of sampling that goes on in some of my favourite music

10 points to Jim Pavloff for putting this together and also Timothy Allan for shooting us the video.

Have you got any examples of awesome sampling?

Pure Awesome: Ctrl Z Producer Master Class

December 8th, 2009

l_d896905e6b536d3738217cdf9f55b4c4

I always love a good tutorial. As writing tunes can sometimes be such an introverted pass time it’s always refreshing to get an insight into other people’s workings and thought processes. This tutorial is by far one of the most interesting and technical I’ve seen and although it centres around breakbeat I think it’s still relevant to anyone who’s tinkering in the studio as Ctrl Z is technically brilliant. Enjoy.

Ctrl Z are a production duo hailing from London. They are one of the hottest acts in the breakbeat world and have become pioneers and trendsetters of harder edged breakbeat.

Tom Petais and Nicky D’Silva, aka Dash and Inch, met through the Community Music Program in London. The pairing up of these two DJs by their tutor was to be the start of something special. When Ctrl Z’s first production was unleashed, it was snapped up by DJ Mutiny’s Funkatech Recordings. ‘Disko’ and ‘Pain’ was a defining episode in break beat history as it caused a tidal wave in the Breaks scene. It blasted it’s way straight to number 1 in the Mixmag charts and straight into the boxes of the Breakbeat elite. This dancefloor bomb paved the way for the duo, but was just a hint of what was to come.

Their DJ sets have to be seen to be believed, headlining Events all over the world, In 2007 they were one of the main drawcards in Annie Nightingales Tent on the Opening night of the infamous Glastonbury festival and became residents at the legendary End club for DJ Friction’s Shogun Audio Night. Always looking to take things to the next level, Ctrl Z have started their own label ‘Never Say Die Records’ in 2009 as an outlet for their ever changing and uncompromising sound.

Use Your APC40 As A Monome For Free

September 15th, 2009

After ordering my APC40 from the lads at Novamusic yesterday I’ve been passing the time looking at some great videos of the controller in action on YouTube and one has caught my attention just now.

Cheesy 80s effects and not very informative but with a hell of a kicker at the end. There would be a fair amount of DIY geekery gone into this project however as the video states: it’s available for free at The Track Team Audio website. If you head to the download section these guys seem to do some cool stuff. There’s some great looking Ableton Racks  as well as some cool looking tutorials which I’m going to have a look at when I get home today.

With Live incorporating Max/MSP support a whole new world of tweaking has opened up for more technologically savvy producers but for the time being I’m willing to leech of the smarts of others and download this free pack that supposedly has everything you’ll need to convert your APC40 (or Korg PadKONTROL) into a Monome at a fraction of the price.

Andy Hart – Valley Crusades EP OUT NOW!!!

August 26th, 2009

BGR007 – Andy Hart – Vally Crusades EP
A: Original Mix
B: Mike Buhl Mix

In a club world awash in excessive minimalism, sampling and electro, it’s quite refreshing to hear this solid effort from newcomer Andy Hart. Hailing from the Down Under mecca of Melbourne, Mr. Hart is representative of the quality and talent to be found throughout the Australian landscape. This is the sound of a cosmopolitan metropolis and the underground dance scene beneath it all. Both tracks complement each other nicely, creating an overall exceptional release.

The original mix is a well-produced, opening set builder. On display are crisp congas and handclaps, blended with mellow basslines and reverberated synth riffs. Lush pads open up at the break, against the backdrop of touchy percussion and effects. Beautiful stuff.

Fellow Aussie talent Mike Buhl turns in a funky groove-laden remix, packed with heavy hitting kick drums, floating synths and captivating melodies. A perfect balance of progression, dancefloor appeal, and deepness.

The original is the stunner here, a wide-screen display of melancholic emotions and cutting-edge minimalism. The beauty of the unknown, the anticipation of the next tune. A gathering of differing personalities, a party where everyone knows the end result. But no one’s giving anything anyway.

Introducing Mike Buhl

Currently, Mike’s music resides somewhere between minimal techno and tech house, which is the perfect realm for his balance between swingin and sinister. While inspired by a medley of electronic artists over the past few decades, the more contemporary artists Mike admires are the likes of Stephan Goldman, Paul Ritch, Richie Hawtin, and the current main players in minimal production.

The past year has seen Mike playing around in the studio collaborating with a couple of other producers under the moniker “3amp”. While this combination of talents promises some exciting music to emerge over the year to come, time in the studio has also encouraged Mike to work on his own solo projects which has seen a number of tracks created in a short period of time.  We’re glad to have Mike on board delivering a stellar remix and we can promise that you’ll be seeing much more of him in the future.

Cool production tools with Jaytech

August 25th, 2009

Track Guide

If the Myers Briggs Personality Type indicator test is anything to go by people either like to make lists or they like to be spontaneous (known as the J-P Dichotomy). I’m most definitely one who likes to make lists and work with the immediate and tangible so it’s no surprise that this cool little flowchart from one of Australia’s best producers appeals to me and my workflow greatly. » More: Cool production tools with Jaytech

New Live Set and Ableton EQs

August 7th, 2009

018eq3
After a 3 month hiatus i’m pretty excited to be playing my first gig in a while tonight for the Nexus Breed Crew. After gigging with my live show steadily for about 4 years I really found that I was burning the candle at both ends and things had got a bit stale so I made a decision to take some time off and really focus on getting some new material written.

The decision has been the highlight of my time writing music and I’ve come out the other side of things with about 7 new productions and a few remixes and most importantly I’ve breathed fresh life into my live show. I’ve been working against the clock a bit so there’s a few tunes in there i haven’t been able to loop out so I can play them completely live but the new layout is really modular and I’ll be able to build on it for some time to come. The file I use for my live set is still the same file a started with years ago and it’s a constantly evolving canvas. » More: New Live Set and Ableton EQs

Recording Monday Morning vocals with Jake from Def Digital

July 27th, 2009

One thing I don’t get the chance to do often enough is record vocals, so today I’m really pumped to be recording in my studio with Jake from Def Digital. I thought the experience might serve as an interesting insight about how we’re doing it.

I’m working on a track called Monday Morning and need a powerful voice to capture the essence of the whole “Monday Morning… don’t wanna got to work” sort of vibe. Jake comes from a band background and his vocal work is solid as you can on the Def Digital releases on BeatGeek. » More: Recording Monday Morning vocals with Jake from Def Digital

remix
Another week’s in the bag and I’m looking forward to a weekend of snowboarding and on Sunday I’ll be strapping on the ice-pack and getting down for some serious remixing. I’ve been busy writing EPs lately so i’m enjoying the change working with other people’s material. Remixing is a great way to hone your craft. » More: Remix weekend
