July 31st, 2009

Luscious_Loops

This is a party I’ve been running for close to 4 years now with my good friend Ben Evans. This saturday we’re hosting an all female lineup for the In The Mix Top 50 Events Series. It’s held at one of the coolest clubs in Melbourne called Miss Libertines and we manage to pack it out every time. If you’re lucky enough to be in Melbourne on Saturday make sure you come say hi. – Blinky » More: Interview this Saturday!

July 30th, 2009

I’ve recently taken about 3 months off gigging to focus on writing more music and getting some releases out there and I thought I’d share a few tips for getting you music signed to other labels and more importantly finding the right labels to be sending your music to.

Recording Monday Morning vocals with Jake from Def Digital

One thing I don’t get the chance to do often enough is record vocals, so today I’m really pumped to be recording in my studio with Jake from Def Digital. I thought the experience might serve as an interesting insight about how we’re doing it.

I’m working on a track called Monday Morning and need a powerful voice to capture the essence of the whole “Monday Morning… don’t wanna got to work” sort of vibe. Jake comes from a band background and his vocal work is solid as you can on the Def Digital releases on BeatGeek. » More: Recording Monday Morning vocals with Jake from Def Digital

NI Audio 2 DJ

July 23rd, 2009

audio-2-dj

After waking up yesterday feeling less than human I decided to take the day off and split my time between sleep and studio, I’m glad I did. i’m back at work feeling 100% and I’ve had time to finish off a few projects. The remix I was doing has been picked up by Epsilon Trax and I got another project off the ground as well as working on tuning up my live set for raft of gigs that are fast approaching.

I’m looking at getting a new soundcard for the live rig and after flipping through Beatportal this morning and stumbling on their competition for the new Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ. » More: NI Audio 2 DJ

Copyright & The “New” Pirate Bay

July 21st, 2009

news-pirate_bayTo celebrate the 1st birthday of my label BeatGeek Records I’m giving away the entire first year’s back catalogue to people who go to the site and sign up to the mailing list. One of the things I’ve been deliberating about is how I should deliver it to the 50 winners and the possible repercussions of the package ending up on torrents or similar - more particularly  – if it ends up on torrents, is this a good thing or a bad thing? Basically the argument is sales vs. exposure and I really think (especially considering it’s back catalogue) the exposure is winning. » More: Copyright & The “New” Pirate Bay

Gig Update

July 20th, 2009

n658685058_1794381_264What a great weekend, had an awesome time up at Buller on Saturday (despite almost breaking my jaw!) and a really productive Sunday working on my remix of a Qbical tune for Epsilon Trax.

I’ve got a heap of remixes in the pipes at the moment and this weekend I’m gonna start chopping them up and putting them in Ableton for my new live set. I’ve taken almost 3 months off gigs to focus on studio work and I’m really glad i did, tracks are sounding better than ever and I’m hanging to get back out there and road test this new set. The performance is a lot different to how I’ve played in the past and I think it’s going to go down quite nicely. I’ll post some clips in the next little while so you can see how it’s going.

So if you’re in Melbourne or Auckland you can check me out on these dates

July 17th, 2009

remix
Another week’s in the bag and I’m looking forward to a weekend of snowboarding and on Sunday I’ll be strapping on the ice-pack and getting down for some serious remixing. I’ve been busy writing EPs lately so i’m enjoying the change working with other people’s material. Remixing is a great way to hone your craft. » More: Remix weekend

Free UPCs and getting your music on iTunes

July 16th, 2009

20090716_1

This shouldn’t be news to anyone really: one thing that everyone’s seems to be doing (and the rest want to do but just haven’t figured out how to yet) is distributing your own music.

When I first started with my label iTunes was the holy grail and depending on which forum troll you listened to there were all sorts of crazy criteria for getting your independent music on iTunes.

Well a short while later and that all seems to have been BS and there’s now a saturation of your-music-to-iTunes distributors and most people I speak to are at a complete loss as to who’s who so I’ve written a little here about the 2 who I think really stand out from the rest and should be the only ones you’ll ever need

blinky_wordpress1Welcome to the site, it’s been a long time coming and it’s still a bit of a work in progress so bear with me while I upload everything and try and work blogging into the natural list of things i do every day.

For those of you who don’t know me here’s a litlle info from my media pack that should fill out this first post nicely!

One of Melbourne’s most notable young producers and live performers, Blinky has gained a cult following with his lush productions and energetic live shows. With a live act comprised of his laptop, midi controller, and synths and his signature antics, Blinky has become a feature attraction of many events regularly playing the likes of Earthcore, Rainbow Serpent, Trance Energy, Kiss My Grass and more

Intent on doing things on his terms and not willing to compromise on quality saw Blinky hold of on realeasing any music until finally in August 08 he released the “There’s A Jesus In My Nectarine EP”, the premier release on his imprint BeatGeek Records. The release received critical acclaim and along with his remix of Kultrun’s “Drift Away” his work has recieved support from the likes of Andy Moor, The Flash Brothers, Matt Rowan, Dumb Dan, Dubfire, Elke Kleijn, DJ Vibe, M.O.D.E. and even a look in from Armin Van Buuren as well as featuring heavily on the charts of some of the major download stores.

Since then Blinky and the BeatGeek brand have gone from strength to strength with Blinky working on a brand new techno infused live show, remixes for various labels around the world and a new EP out through Kosmas Epsilon’s Epsilon Trax imprint the last half of 2009 is looking to be even bigger than the first.

So there ya go, i’ll be updating this regularly with info about me, my studio, label, gigs and other thing that I find around the interwebz.
