Melbourne Deepcast 006 – Simon Flower

October 27th, 2009

006a

The brainchild of house music wunderkinds Andy Hart (BeatGeek/ Etoka) and Miles Mac - Melbourne Deepcast is by far one of the most quality podcasts coming out of Australia at the moment and this installation mixed by Simon Flower is definitive proof of that.

I highly recommend you get out in the sun and check this one out.  Whilst you’re on the download make sure you grab a copy of the  Pablo Bolivar episode too, it’s still my favorite, a very special mix.

Simon Flower

(Poker Flat/Moon Harbour)

Proving that a little isolation can go a long way…residing in the far-flung islands of New Zealand has done nothing to stop Simon scoring a stream of releases on prestigious and in-demand labels such as Poker Flat, Moon Harbour, Dessous, Compost Black Label and newcomer Curl Curl. The releases have very quickly scored highly with critics, punters and DJs alike, being charted or played by people such as Steve Bug, Josh Wink and Anja Schneider, and even securing no.3 in the coveted top50 Groove magazine singles chart.

Since the early 90’s Simon has been busy producing, promoting parties, DJing and running record labels. He was one of the small group of people instrumental in starting and keeping the underground techno scene in Auckland, New Zealand alive and kicking, from 1993 through till the present. Their roots and inspiration were found principally in the Berlin/Detroit axis, deep electronic music with soul.
While as a DJ over the years he played far and wide, and in New Zealand played alongside a wide variety of well known international artists such as Richie Hawtin, Ian Pooley and Derrick May, it is now playing his own music live that excites him the most – and the last few years have certainly seen an abundance of memorable opportunities to play his music to people across the world.

Beatport Exclusive: Blinky – Monday Morning EP Out

October 14th, 2009

VPR161_1200

Some of you will remember my post here a while back about recording vocals for this track in my studio. It came out yesterday and has been getting some great attention straight off the bat.  Seedy Jazz did the remix after I bumped into him @ Schumacher at The Prince as it turned out he’d already done a few remixes for Vinyl Pusher. Also quite fitting I thought as he used to come to my house for some studio time when he was first starting out. I think he’s done a great job; a nice, complimentary remix.

Really looking forward to seeing how this one pans out. Hope you enjoy it and make sure you add a copy to your crate.

Richie Hawtin Spotted With New NI Traktor Controller

October 5th, 2009

Always weak at the knees for new controllers and a massive fan of Richie Hawtin’s live shows it goes without saying that this video the “a few of my favourite things” category to a tee.

Seeing Fergie playing Traktor of a couple of Faderfoxes the other night did get me thinking that there (until now it seems) hasn’t been a widely accepted standard midi controller for Traktor and with the recent spate of companies (ahem, Ableton) focusing their attention on the controller market NI’s additions look at face value to be extremely solid and more than likely leaving Allan & Heath’s marketing department feeling a bit outdone.

Looking at the video the mappings seem quite standard and effective, I did notice that there’s still a bit of “email checking” going on when queueing up new tracks. Something which I really dislike about most Traktor setups, that said I love the height of these, they sit flush with the mixer and the build looks quality. Apart from that the video doesn’t give much away but it’s got us talking and we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for this either in time for Christmas or possibly at NAMM

Ableton, Novation Launch Launchpad (aka the Monome Killer)

October 2nd, 2009

launchpad

After getting my APC40 snug in my studio a curve ball has been thrown way out of left field this morning.

I wrote a post a little while back about using your APC as a Monome with Max MSP in live but today that all seems to be null and void with Ableton and Novation’s Launch Pad takes the competition head on and with a price point rumoured to be in the vicinity of $250 we can expect a rush on these to rival that of the APC40 and beyond.

Will you be buying one?
