Blinky Remixes Qbical for Epsilon Trax

November 25th, 2009

Qbical

I’m pumped to have this one out as it’s been one of my favourite tracks to play live over the last couple of months and it really gets the floor grooving so needless to say I’m really happy to see it sitting on the top of Qbical’s Beatport sales chart.

As far as the production goes this remix was quite involved and much time was spent EQing as most of the sounds in the track have 2 or 3 layers mainly from the Virus TI and Albino 3, both of which have me convinced that I’m never going to need any other synths for the rest of my life. Massively versatile and really complimentary to this type of lush techno in particular.

I didn’t know a lot about Qbical before i started this project but I’m quite intrigued by his sound, in particular this EP and his stuff for Manual Music, it’s raw synthetics cleverly put together.

Add this one to your cart! https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/release/detail/204153/Stripped%20/%20Synced

Raymond van Baal, also known as Qbical was born in 1983 in a little town in The Netherlands called Leusden. He came in contact with music at a young age, his parents were very into different kinds of music and his father played drums in a band. It was only natural that Raymond followed in his fathers footsteps. So, aged nine he enlisted in the local music school taking drum lessons.

Listening to tapes from Micheal Jackson, Phil Collins and other 80’s heavyweights while playing with Lego Raymond came in contact with different kinds of music. Later he borrowed his sisters keyboard to learn himself a little bit of music theory but he didn’t knew that then, he just tried to copy the melody’s of movie themes and 90’s dance music.
After
highschool started playing drums in a rock ‘n roll / punk band called ‘Rocker Arms‘. With Rocker Arms he recorded an album and toured almost all the small clubs in The Netherlands. In 2006 after seven years of playing drums Raymond decided to quit the band and focus on electronic music.

Qbical started one day in a MadTrackersession. Raymond finished a track and needed a name to put it online. His sound then is heavily influenced by acts and band’s like : The Chemical Brothers, Leftfield, Orbital. After putting several EP’s online for free Raymond is picked up by Manual Music and releases his first vinyl release “Warm Fuzzy Electronics”.
Lot’s of remixes followed and Raymond played a lot of nice party’s and festivals with his energetic live sets. Now with the release of his debut album “Life Is Just A Bunch Of Pixels” Raymond sets out for another chapter in the qbical story, finishing his education at the Utrecht School of Arts is one thing, the other is doing a lot of mastering for dance artists and labels. Also perfecting the production of new EP’s, live shows and even planning a follow up album, there is a lot coming!

The Swiss based musician Raphaël Ripperton has worked on his unique production style for about 15 years now. In this time he has played in various bands, established his own label Perspectiv Records and produced and remixed endless 12″. Ripperton has released on labels such as Dessous, Systematic, Rekids, Liebe Detail, Connaisseur, Sthlm Audio, Plak and many more, and has remixed the likes of Laurent Garnier, Chardronnet, Beanfield, Steve Lawler and the exceptional band Radiohead.
He gained outstanding popularity with his project Lazy Fat People that was signed on Border Community, Wagon Repair and on Carl Craig’s Planet E. In recent years Ripperton’s tracks have been included on compilations by luminaries such as Steve Bug, Loco Dice, James Holden and Joris Voorn. And on his own label, Perspectiv, he is constantly on the search for impeccable new talent to uncover such as Australia’s own Christian Vance, who debuted on the label last year with the hugely successful Tiger Snake EP.
As a DJ Ripperton spins the melodic and lush end of house, minimal and techno. With his debut album Niwa set to drop on Joris Voorn’s Green imprint late 2009, his highly anticipated return to Australia is finally upon us. Catch him spin New Years Day night on the BLOW YOUR OWN WAY boat party alongside fellow Deepcast artists Christian Vance, Myles Mac and Andy Hart.

I’ve always been a big fan of John 00 Flemming, he was one of the first producers that really caught my attention when i started listening to club music and to this day he remains at the forefront of melodic dance music. » More: Blinky – Age Of Reason Exclusively on JOOF’s “Global Trance Grooves”

Kontrol X1

November 4th, 2009

You’ll remember a post I made here a couple of weeks ago about Richie Hawtin sporting a cool new NI controller. Well here it is although one of my favorite aspects - the height to sit flush with decks etc - seems to have been removed. Either way it looks great

(FROM CDM)

The Traktor Kontrol X1 is an exercise in minimalism, reducing the various uses of Traktor to a few encoders and buttons and a compact form factor. But while it supports MIDI for use with any DJ software, its “high-resolution” mode – as with Maschine before it – uses a proprietary protocol. The unit will sell for US$229 when it ships in February of next year. » More: Kontrol X1
