Substance Featuring Danny Bonnici & Blinky this Saturday.

April 20th, 2010 No comments »

Well this is gonna be just awesome. For all you poopers out there who a constantly complaining that you’re sick of the same old venues this gig’s for you. Not only is the Terminus one of the best east-side pubs going, this Saturday it will be jam packed with beat-treats from an eclectic mix of Melbourne DJs myself included. Here’s the write up, hope to see you there.

You thought we’d disappeared hadn’t you? Thought we’d slipped away?…..You Were WRONG! We’d been biding our time, laying in wait like a tiger waiting for the opportune moment to pounce…. And yes, the opportune moment is here and the time for pouncing is now! Substance is back, baby and what better way to celebrate our Second birthday than on the roof-top of the Terminus Hotel in Abbotsford!

In The Studio With…. Blinky – Today In Inpress

April 14th, 2010 No comments »

Inpress are an awesome publication so I’m chuffed that they asked me to do a quick Q&A about the goings on in the world of Blinky at the moment to promote Interview this weekend which incidentally is going to be rammed so make sure you get in quick! www.interview.net.au

IN THE STUDIO Q&A – BLINKY

By Daniel Sanders

Did classical music training make it easier to jump into electronic music production or do you feel it wasn’t 100% necessary? If you didn’t come from this background, how different do you think your music would be?

I’d say it’s defiantly a great kickstart and it helps to have some musical intuition but that said it’s not the be all and end all. There’s thousands of amazing producers out there that can’t play a note and write fantastic music. I’ve always had an ear for music, classical training is a small part of it.

How do you approach preparing/compiling material for your live set and ensure that the performance remains interactive and visually appealing for a crowd?

Keeping the show visually stimulating has never been a problem for me as there’s so much going on when I play live. These day’s I’m writing heaps and trying to release at least a tune or remix once a month so I’m always adding new tracks to the set. With all the production that’s going on the live set is a constantly » Read more: In The Studio With…. Blinky – Today In Inpress

Ableton Announces Sony Partnership – Ableton & PSP

April 1st, 2010 No comments »

Just when you thought you were getting over your NAMM hangover the news mill spins out another bombshell that will have you saving up your pennies all over again.

Ableton’s modus for 2010 seems to be “invitation by collaboration” as demonstrated by the slew of partnerships over the last 12 moths from Akai to Novation to Serato.

This morning Ableton, represented by CEO and cofounder Gerhard Behles and President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Kaz Hirai announced a new product that is a radical shift away from the market the you and I occupy.

The product – a stripped down version of Ableton Live that can be played on the Playstation 3 and PSP consoles – is aimed at tapping into an ever growing market of young would-be bedroom producers.

Although details and footage of the product are scarce at this stage some developement images have been leaked showing a slightly lack-lusture interface however I’m hoping there’s a bit more under the hood once we’re able to scratch the surface

CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Kaz Hirai commented “we like to think of making music as the worlds biggest video game”

Juno to launch white-label store with Discogs.com

March 30th, 2010 No comments »

This has to be one of the more interesting emails that I’ve received from an outlet recently. Juno (who have just acquired the recently insolvent DJ Download) are working with discogs.com to rejuvenate what I have always seen as one of the biggest downsides of digital – white labels.

Dear Supplier

Juno Download has partnered with Discogs.com, the worldÂ’s 5th largest music website*, to launch Discogs Digital, a white-label version of the Juno Download store. » Read more: Juno to launch white-label store with Discogs.com

m.beatport.com

March 19th, 2010 2 comments »

So no doubt that this morning when I got a tweet from Beatport about their new mobile friendly site http://m.beatport.com I felt slightly nervous.  I think @djbicksta sums up my initial reaction pretty well…

Why?!? Even less social interaction from me now!! RT @beatport: Introducing Beatport Mobile. Another great reason to stare at your phone. -

That’s not to say that I haven’t thought about this very day on many a boring tram/train/llama ride in the past but now it’s here I’m looking at the 1.44Mb LoFi MP3s and thinking about all the ways my carrier can castrate me with data charges as I mindlessly download my limit in one afternoon.

Imediatly I( had a bit of a play on the tram this morning and for a first offering the site is pretty darn clunky when viewed in Nokia’s native browser (not the best) and only slightly better on the PC but I’m sure this will all be ironed out depending on the level of uptake they receive. Apart from that I’ve had no problem previewing and buying tracks and can now happily do my digging on the way to the office each morning. There’s also an iPhone app on its way which will definitely be worth a look once it’s our later this year which I’m sure will be much smoother.

EDIT: I got this response from Kevin @ Beatport and I’m happy to say that it works a treat. Thanks for getting in touch Kev.

Hi there. I’m a product manager at Beatport… Sorry about the clunky display stuff in your phone’s browser — I wish we could support everything equally.

I’m not sure what specific device you have, but I’d suggest trying Opera Mini if it’s available (http://cn.opera.com/mini/download/nokia/). Hopefully that improves the experience.

Enjoy!
